Silent Luxury
E X P R E S I O N _ N A T I V A https://www.lofficiel.com.ar/moda/expresion-nativa "Alpaca is the fiber of the future" Mariana Iturrioz Mardones heard her say to a friend during a visit to Peru in the early 2000s. Immediately, she wanted to learn more about this natural fiber with exceptional properties from a species native to South America. In the experience of touring the alpaca production chain she saw an opportunity to apply her vast knowledge in international trade. A few years later she created the brands Baby Alpaca Collection and I T U R R I O Z a l p a c a - Silent Luxury - to reach global luxury markets. L'OFFICIEL: What is your definition of quiet luxury? MARIANA ITURRIOZ MARDONES: It is a stealthy and subtle style, without visible logos or extravagances. It is part of a way of life that understands luxury as something everyday. Except for the expert eye, it can go unnoticed. It is identified by details that reveal high quality. The use of noble materials, a design with clean lines, impeccable finishes, excellent drape cuts and the preference for natural colors are some of its attributes. LO: Why did you choose that style? MI: I bought my first alpaca coat in the New York store Saks in 1990. An aunt who took me shopping there taught me to value the qualities of a good garment. At that time she did not know the properties of this material; The cover turned out fabulous! I wore it for many years without being aware of what I was wearing. LO: When did your interest in natural fibers arise? MI: For different reasons, I have traveled frequently to Peru since 1985 and the alpaca caught my attention from the first moment. In 2006, during a lunch in Lima, they told me that the second alpaca company in the country had opened its first stores and they invited me to visit them I was fascinated. Months later I returned and made contact with the leading yarn export company. In an informal chat I told one of their managers about my experience with international trade and my knowledge of different markets. Shortly he called me to offer me a collaboration for the export of finished product. This is how I began to contact the world's largest clients and distributors. LO: When did you start your own line? MI: Shortly after, I began to develop industrial flat fabric products with great success. In 2008 I created the Baby Alpaca Collection label and our designs were extremely well received and requested. In 2010 I began exporting small volumes from Peru to the United States and, in 2022, I opted for the European market. For that I formed a company in Malaga from where I can distribute to the rest of the continent I developed I T U R R I O Z a l p a c a - Silent Luxury Today the brand has a presence in Paris, St Jean de Luz, Madrid, San Sebastián, Barcelona, Marbella, Nueva Andalucía, Sotogrande and, exclusively, in Gibraltar. LO: What characteristics does this particular fiber have? MI: The baby alpaca is not necessarily a product of the animal's first shearing, it can be obtained from adult alpacas in minimal quantities. The quality of a fiber is defined by its thickness, which in this case is between 16 and 23 microns. That makes it seven times warmer than sheep's wool, as soft as cashmere and much lighter. In addition, it is hypoallergenic due to its low lanolin content. It is biodegradable and, given its constitution, repels water. Alpaca is a rare and intelligent and long-lasting fiber. LO: What sustainability criteria govern production? MI: First of all, it must be emphasized that throughout all stages of the chain there is neither child labor nor enslaving working conditions. Shearing respects the principles of animal care, and is even beneficial if it is done in a timely manner. The fiber obtained is classified manually following an ancient technique. The spinning takes about thirty days, then it goes to the weaving stage on looms assembled to suit the designs. LO: Do the products have certifications? MI: I can proudly tell you that all the industrial plants I work with have the Fair Trade seal. To obtain Premium quality that export demands, we use high technology and qualified labor. The European market is very demanding and it is extremely important to account for the treatment that animals receive. LO: Regarding South American camelids, are they all known in international markets? MI: All, and very appreciated. On a scale of valuation and price, from highest to lowest, they are ordered as follows: the vicuña, the guanaco, the alpaca and the llama. Currently, baby alpaca competes internationally with cashmere due to its excellent properties and its sustainable status. Although it is produced in other parts of the world, the Peruvian variety is distinguished by its quality. Feeding the animals based on quinoa from the Andean highlands gives it incredible shine and softness. LO: Have you ever thought about incorporating artisanal production? MI: I have developed collections with artisan weavers from Puno, Peru. On many occasions I have remained in the high mountains accompanying and supervising the work, my connection with the communities was always very good. Unfortunately, for my type of project the artisanal volumes are minimal, they take longer the result is not uniform. A product with these characteristics demands another type of marketing. LO: Who designs the products? MI: In the case of Baby Alpaca Collection, the designs are from the artisans and ours. In I T U R R I O Z a l p a c a the design is simpler with a prevalence of natural colors. This line specializes in blankets, throws, scarves, stoles, capes and wraps. LO: What are your future plans? MI: The idea is to incorporate other fibers such as guanaco and vicuña and add pieces such as sweaters and vests. In the meantime, I will continue to introduce the brand in Belgium, Italy, Germany and Switzerland.
